Camping is such a wonderful family adventure. If you are going to take children with you, it will give them some lifetime memories. Anyone who went camping as a kid can vouch for that. It doesn’t matter what you actually do during the trip, or what the weather ends up being like, it is always a great adventure when you are a kid.
Remember to bring the essential items. You will need to bring a tent unless you are planning to stay in a cabin or camper. You will want some kind of shelter for yourself and your family. Depending on where you are going, there are a number of variables you might want decent shelter from.
Some of the absolutely necessary tools of camping are flashlights, pillows, sleeping bags, batteries, a hatchet and chairs. If you are camping in a tent, think about getting yourself an inflatable air mattress. It will really improve your entire trip if you get a decent nights rest.
Think ahead so you have the necessary tools for building a campfire. Bring old newspapers or thinner pieces of cardboard. Take a lighter and some matches. I like to bring both a camping saw and a hatchet. I also would rather take my own wood. You might not be able to bring in your own wood for various reasons depending on where you are going to be camping. Some campgrounds have regulations about it because of plant diseases.
You should think about cooking your meals. Consider bringing a cooler for food, propane stove, propane tanks, plates, silverware, dish rag, soap and a plastic tub for washing dishes. Not all parks have the facilities to wash dishes. We usually take throw away plates and silverware.
Think about what kinds of clothes you will need for the camping trip. If you are going to go hiking, make sure you have some comfortable hiking boots. You don’t want blisters. Bring loose clothes and a couple pairs of shorts if it will be warm. Bring some long pants if it is supposed to be cold. Your clothes may get soiled or ripped so you shouldn’t wear your best stuff. Don’t forget to bring a bathing suit, rain poncho, sweatshirt and a hat. Those are must have items for any camping trip.
Remember to bring your personal hygiene products for you and your loved ones. Pack all of the essentials into convenient bags. Make sure you bring cotton swabs, bars of soap, shampoo, deodorant, razors, and shaving cream. Don’t forget to remember contact lens solution if someone wears them. Don’t forget to pack towels for everybody. If you intend to be gone more than a couple days, you are going to want something to hang the towels on to dry out. Don’t forget to pack any necessary medicines.
Some other stuff that you should bring to make the trip even more enjoyable would be campfire popcorn, some kind of lantern, binoculars, digital cameras, bug spray, marshmallows and chocolate bars, beer, cocktails, cigars, burn ointment, band aids, sun tan oil and a radio.
Bring toys for the young ones. You are going to have a lot more fun on your trip if the youngsters have plenty of things to occupy their time. Anyways, half the reason you are going away is for them to have fun too. One guy that I know takes recordings of ghost stories to play around the campfire after dark. You could also bring a softball, baseball, football, Frisbee or a kite. Bring anything you can think of that can be done safely outdoors. Make the most use of the wide open areas in most campgrounds.
Create a personalized camping cheat sheet. There are going to be things that you consider essential that I haven’t listed. Make a complete list of your own, so you won’t forget anything. Some people can’t go anywhere without taking a cell phone, fishing gear or insect repellent.

I have a small portable wood burning camp stove that I use in the garden
when the grandchildren say over.
We all wrap up warm and sit around the fire cooking good things to eat.
They take it in turns to light the Fire-Spout
see http://www.occuk.co.uk/outdoor
the idea is they must light it with only one match
It’s great fun

Excellent article Dan. Family camping is a great way for families to vacation in this economy. I would also add to your list a small broom and dust pan for sweeping out the tent - it is so easy to track in leaves and things without knowing it. A small rug for the tent opening is also a big help.
Happy camping!
