The NFL is the dominant force in American sports; it is in fact the only sport which can boast of having the attention of the majority of American fans. One thing which makes the NFL unique among American sports is that it keeps the attention of fans even during its off season. Year round, the NFL is in the news and at the forefront of the minds of fans.
All professional sports have drafts every year, but only the NFL draft manages to draw a huge audience; the drafts are televised and fans spend the months leading up to the draft excitedly guessing about the outcome. Which players will go to which teams, which teams will come out of the draft with the strongest players and much more are eagerly debated. Following the draft, the success or failure of each franchise becomes the topic of much discussion.
As soon as the Super Bowl ends, the NFL gears up for the draft, it never misses a beat. The free agency season all kicks off, which means players are changing teams and the NFL can stay in the headlines. The draft also means more speculation, rumors and trades. All of this action helps the interest in the NFL stay warm even when there are no games being played.
Even as the NBA and NHL are about to enter their playoffs, sports fans are more focused on the NFL draft. Even the opening of the baseball season is smaller news than the draft. Among American sports, only the NFL can manage to remain the center of attention without even having any games on the schedule.
Then the summer comes around and there are training camps. People talk about which players are disgruntled and which new coaches are getting their teams into shape. There is debate about which player will win the battle for the starting job and so on.
The preseason games are also broadcast nationally and even games featuring the second and third string players are still highly watched. No other sport’s preseason games receives anywhere near this kind of attention. Not hockey, not basketball, only the NFL is accorded this level of importance.
Once the season proper begins, the excitement builds week after week. With only 16 weeks in the regular season, each game takes on great importance. The NFL is popular enough that the league is discussing the possibility of lengthening the season, something which fans are eager to see - but regardless, the closer the arrival of the postseason, the greater the excitement of fans and the higher the viewership.
NFL fans are a dedicated group; all year round, they’re keeping a close eye on the sport. Casual viewers who catch only a handful of games per season are often largely unaware of the latest developments or indeed, all of the players on their favorite team. During the off season from the draft to training, the NFL is a sport which keeps the attention of fans; the only sport which is this popular all year.
